The idiocy of Malaysian school administrators. Part 2

So, I'm back from my 3 day conference. Rotorua was.. well, smelt eggy as usual.. ppooh. Tired, but not too tired to update you peeps on how, my former high school in Malaysia, is handling the situation. Well, there've been quite a few people who have blogged about it. Including Jolene (on my list of links) who has a few links to others who have blogged about this issue.

In fact, Jolene very nicely tells us about the incident where the school got ffk-ed (stood up) by some stupid big shot which was preceded by some senseless last minute cleaning. Also describes the typical scene for when a big-shot would come.. Bunga manggar (some random thing with like things sticking out like a coconut tree but colourful) and kompangs (a Malay music instrument.. like a drum) would come out in full force la.. heh..=.=

Yeah, I think I might've been stood up by that same big shot actually.. but it's something that I couldn't be bothered with I suppose. i mean, with most politicians.. you really can't take their word for it can you... especially when they come from certain circles. Yah, I'm talking about any politician/big shot that think they're helluva great and not humble at all. So, you see.. it wasn't something surprising at all that would've raised an eye-brow eh..

ANYWAY.. digressed enough i think..

Back to the topic.. Let me first correct myself. At the time of my last post, no threats had been officially released yet. To quote the Organising chairperson of the Prefect's reunion 2008, "..... a lil correction. there were threats. no blackmailing as been done. yet. We'll see how it goes in the next meeting with the school."

To be honest, I think threats along are BAD enough. Having just looked up the definitions of blackmail. I suppose it isn't a very fitting term for what the school authorities had taken. Well, like I said. You don't THREATen your students and teachers. You sit down and have DISCUSSIONS and what not. You don't threaten someone unless it's severe. Was it necessary?

No matter, even though I had jumped the gun in making as if the school had done something so horrible, well, they pretty much did what I said anyway. Well, according to what I read on Hannah Yeoh's follow up blog post - Latest news from SMKSU. How predictable..

Read also the other post.. it does really open your eyes to what's happening. "Set our schools free!" In this post, she mentions that there has been some funny circular distributed after the 2008 general elections in which it states that any 'big-shots' invited to the school should get the approval of the ministry first.. wah lau -.-" Need or not ar? Not only that..

"3. Walau apa pun, keutamaan hendaklah diberi kepada Yang Berhormat Menteri
Pelajaran, Yang Berhormat Timbalan-Timbalan Menteri Pelajaran, Ketua Setiausaha
Kementerian Pelajaran, Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran Malaysia, Pengarah Pelajaran
Negeri atau wakil-wakil mereka untuk majlis perasmian sama ada di peringkat
Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri, Pejabat Pelajaran Gabungan/ Daerah mahupun di
peringkat sekolah"

Translation :

3. Whatever is (not too sure how to translate this), priority needs to be given to the Honourable Education minister, Deputy Education Ministers, Head Secretary of the Education Ministry, Head Director of Education Malaysia, State Education Director or their representatives for officiating/official(damn fail la my translational skills) functions whether or not at the levels of State Education Department, Joint Education office / district or at school level.

heh.. oh.. got directive on telling u who you have to invite one ka? Is this the same with every country? Something new to me! Anyway, the document (in Malay) is available through Hannah Yeoh's blog post.

So, apparently, the latest news is that according to the Education Ministry, Hannah should be allowed to go

Haih, apparently some people are just taking things too extremely. yeesh.

I wonder if the school's going to allow her to go anyway in the end? It is one thing for the ministry to say so.. but the egos of some silly nut at the top may still prevent them from doing the right thing....

Though, I guess this is a real thing to think about. Why are governments giving such directives? It's as if they're just so scared... hahah.. maybe they have reason to be. I mean, if they don't control the minds of the students, they might just end up like me... aware.
